I use to ponder if there were certain secrets of a happy life, and I searched for those.  I was told if you make more money, have more things, live in a nicer home, drive a better car, help other people, etc. that you would find happiness.  If you live long enough, you will see that none of those things bring lasting happiness.  They bring short-term joy but not lifelong contentment.

“Trust in the Lord and do good.  Then you will live in the land and enjoy its food.”
Psalm 37:3 (NIrV)

Our Bible verse today gives us the keys to real joy and contentment.  First, we must put total trust in the Lord that He knows what he is doing in our life and the world at large.  That is a very difficult thing to do, because we all like to run our own show.  Second, the verse says to do good.  So, if we help enough people then we will have lasting joy?  Doing good can be many things.  It can mean we live our life in such a way that if God walked in the room we would not be embarrassed at what was going on in that room of our life.  It can also mean that we give help to those in need when we have the means to do so and do not withhold that help, because we want to buy another trinket instead of meeting someone else’s need.  It can mean that we do good to our own selves.  We do not abuse our bodies or our spirits with a lifestyle that we know brings us anxiety in our quiet moments.

The second part of the verse says we will live in the land (the promises of God land) and enjoy its food (benefits) when we Trust in the Lord and do good.  That is a pretty easy formula for a much less stressful, striving life that many folks are living right now and don’t know how to get off the hamster wheel.
